Ken Taggart founded Chatty Kids in 2013 because he wanted to ensure his own children learn to read well; he has two boys Lucas and Calum living in Sydney, Australia. The kids were bringing home 3 different leveled readers (picture books with text graded for a particular level of difficulty) from school for their weekly reading homework; but he wanted more books to use and practice reading with the children more often. He discovered they were difficult to buy & they were expensive! He needed something that provided parents with everything they needed to help their kids learn to read better, but he couldn’t find such a product? So he decided to create it himself, for his own kids to use.
“We want Chatty Kidz to be useful to our own families & to help us to better educate our own children; if it’s useful to us then it is going to be useful for you too.”
In addition the grandmother, who lived in the UK, complained that her grandchildren wouldn’t talk for long enough during their weekly video call. Ken combined the kids reading homework from school with the weekly family call, allowing the grandmother to help the kids read levelled books. The kids did their homework (which pleased the parents), the kids spent 40 minutes on a video call (which pleased the grandparent) and most importantly it gave valuable time to the parents!
Several years later and Chatty Kidz is a successful, growing global educational product that aims to teach 1,000,000 kids to read and speak English better!
